Step 1: Measure real demand (not gut feeling)

The #1 beginner mistake is picking products they "like". Demand is measured with data: review count (a reliable sales proxy on Amazon), sales rank (BSR) and search volume. As a rule of thumb, a product with hundreds of reviews and a 4.2+ rating has proven demand.

Step 2: Calculate the margin before you fall in love

The selling price is NOT your profit. Subtract: supplier cost (≈25-55% of the selling price depending on the category), Amazon fees (~15%), shipping and, if you use FBA, storage fees. If the net margin drops below 20%, the product is risky.

Step 3: Analyze the competition

Look for the sweet spot: enough proven demand but no dominant brands. If the top results have 10,000+ reviews, entering will be very expensive. If nobody has reviews, there may be no real demand. Ideal: competitors with hundreds (not thousands) of reviews.

Step 4: Validate the trend

A product with a good score but a declining trend is a trap. Make sure interest is stable or growing. Beware of seasonality: a Christmas product looks amazing in December and dies in January.
